quoted from the news media one of the reasons why there was a massive demonstration in Hong Kong was as follows,

Hong Kong has been part of Mainland China since 1997 after being a British colony for 150 years. But since 1997, Beijing has guaranteed Hong Kong as a special autonomous region, namely "One Country, Two Systems" which will continue until at least 2047. This means that by 2047, Hong Kong has a judicial system, a police force, and an independent executive and legislative system of government separate from Mainland China. But Hong Kong has no right to have its own army or speak in international political forums.

But in February 2019 the Hong Kong Government submitted an amendment to the Criminal and Fugitive Extradition Act to LegCo or the Hong Kong Parliament. The essence of the law is to allow fugitives or criminals from Hong Kong to other countries including Mainland China, Taiwan and Macau. Chief Executive Carrie Lam underlies the filing of this law on the case of Chan Tong-kai who killed his girlfriend in Taiwan, but can only be sentenced in Hong Kong for 29 months on the basis of money laundering due to jurisdiction issues. The submission of the bill triggered the reaction of HK citizens.

"The government (Hong Kong) has arranged for a specific case-by-case criminal surrender and amended the law so that it can send people to Mainland China, which according to Hong Kong legislation is prohibited by law, and therefore many Hong Kong residents oppose this for violating what which was agreed upon during the surrender of Hong Kong from Britain to China (in 1997) and this made many Hong Kong citizens worried by the law that freedom of speech and expression would also be lost, not only for Hong Kong citizens, but all foreigners. here, "said Icarus Wong, from the Civil Rights Observer group, Monday, 6/17/2019.
